Basel: Birsig Tour

Dear alumni

We’re thrilled to introduce an exciting new experience: the Birsig Tour! Join us to uncover fascinating stories and hidden gems that reveal Basel's rich history.

With the Birsig tour, you’ll experience a piece of the city’s history. The Birsig – once a source of energy (Rümelinsbach) and part of the sewage system – has been gradually covered over the past centuries. Today, the city stream is barely noticed, even though it significantly shaped the current appearance of the city. After attending a Birsig tour, you’ll be able to mentally connect the upper and lower worlds of Basel.

The meeting point and starting location of the tours is at the main entrance of Basel Zoo on Binningerstrasse 40. After an above-ground section, the group descends into the tunnel at Lohweg. Over a stretch of 1.2 km, you will experience Basel’s underground world. Along the way, connections to the surface are repeatedly drawn, and past times are brought to life. The tour ends at Schifflände after approximately 1 ¼ hours.

Anyone still feeling energized after the tour is warmly invited to join us for an apéro to unwind and enjoy good company.
