Basel: Rhine Swimming 2025

Despite an unexpected turn in the weather, the Basel chapter of the Columbia Alumni Association of Switzerland held its annual Rhine Swim last Friday evening in Basel. Traditionally one of our more intimate events, the Rhine Swim has consistently drawn a small but enthusiastic group of alumni each year—and this summer was no exception.

Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the event was postponed due to thunderstorms and a sudden drop in temperature. Fortunately, Friday brought back the sunshine, allowing three alumni from the original seven registered to take part in the beloved summer tradition.

The group met at the Tinguely Museum and floated downstream to the Kaserne, enjoying the scenic views and managing to capture a photo at the Floos Photo Point. After drying off and warming up, we gathered at a nearby spot in Utengasse for drinks and a light meal. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with plenty of laughter and conversation.

Later that evening, the riverbank came alive with music from a visiting cover band from England performing ABBA classics at the Floos vestival. Their lively set added a festive international flair to the night and drew a large crowd to the waterfront.

While the turnout remained modest, the spirit of the event was strong. We’re grateful to those who joined and made the most of the evening. Here's hoping for better weather next year—and we look forward to welcoming more alumni to future events.

Stay tuned for upcoming gatherings and opportunities to connect!
